Senior Research Assistant/Research Assistant I/II (several posts) in the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole of the School of Public Health (Ref.: 512225) (to commence as soon as possible on a one-year temporary basis or two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance).


Applicants for Senior Research Assistant should hold a Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics or a related discipline in life/health/medical sciences, with at least three years’ work experience; OR a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with at least one year’s work experience. Those with lower qualifications and/or less experience may be considered for appointment as Research Assistant I/II. Those who plan to pursue postgraduate studies are welcome to apply. Applicants should have experience in programming languages such as python or R, proficiency in command line tools for data science, a good command of written and spoken English, and strong communication skills. They should be organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently and collaboratively. Preference will be given to those with knowledge of computational methods in genomics, phylogenetics, or population genetics, and a keen interest in infectious disease research.


The appointees will join Dr. Dhanasekaran’s research team and work on projects related to the genomic epidemiology and evolution of SARS-CoV-2, seasonal and zoonotic influenza, and other respiratory viruses. They will analyse datasets using open source tools; develop scripts and pipelines to integrate clinical, epidemiological and genomic data from viral disease outbreaks for visualization and interpretation; and contribute to the design and implementation of computational projects in collaboration with international experts in the field of virology.


A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment on fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme totalling up to 10% of basic salary.
