The world's first vaccine against dengue fever, a fast-growing mosquito-borne disease, is to be launched early next year in Mexico after the French company Sanofi-Pasteur has received a marketing authorization.
The vaccine, Dengvaxia® , is designed to prevent four types of dengue virus says Sanofi-Pasteur.
Designing this vaccine required 20 years of research and more than 1.6 billion US dollars according to the company.
Other marketing authorizations should occur in the weeks to come in some 20 countries in South America and Asia.
"First marketing authorization of Dengvaxia® is a historic milestone paving the way to significantly impact dengue burden in endemic countries"
