Research Seminar by Prof Antoine Danchin

The Department of Biochemistry, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong presents a research seminar entitled:

"Stability requirements for efficient metabolic engineering" by Prof Antoine Danchin (AMAbiotics, SAS - Metabolic Bioremediation, France), first Director of HKU-Pasteur Research Centre between 2000-2003.

Abstract: Synthetic Biology has raised much hopes in the domain of metabolic engineering, from synthesis of high value fine chemicals to biofuels. However analyses of extant experiments involving large synthetic constructs show that, more often than not, the human constructs are progressively erased as cells multiply. We will propose an explanation for this general process and show that this is an in-built property of life, encoded in genomes, that needs to be tamed before we are able to scale up metabolic engineered processes.

Date: January 4, 2011 (Tuesday)

Time: 4:00 pm

Venue: Seminar Room 6, LG/F, Laboratory Block Faculty of Medicine Building, 21 Sassoon Road, Hong Kong
