The Story of the Pasteur Institute and Its Contributions to Global Health
Marie-Hélène Marchand, former Secretary General of the Institut Pasteur from 1983 to 2010, wrote a book about Institut Pasteur and its contribution to global health. It is now available in English through Cambridge Scholars Publishing website.
Book description: Despite the fame surrounding the name of Louis Pasteur, few people know what exactly occurs at the institute he founded in 1887. Scientific breakthroughs made by pioneers of microbiology, the emergence of molecular biology and genomics, and the identification of VIH–1 in 1983 have kept the Pasteur Institute at the forefront of the fight against infectious diseases.
This prestigious private foundation has upheld the vision of its founder, creating a Pasteurian community worldwide, with 33 Pasteur Institutes on five continents, and supported by both famous and unknown donors throughout the world.
This book presents the fascinating story of an institution which had enormous influence on both British and American science and medicine. It offers detailed and personal insights into the Pasteur Institute, where lively personalities and outsized passions give birth to excitement and the triumph of world-class research.
Biography: Marie–Hélène Marchand graduated from l'Institut d'Etudes Politiques, Paris, and received her doctorate in Political Studies in 1966. She served as the Secretary General of the Pasteur Institute from 1983 to 2010, having previously worked as Scientific Attaché to the French Embassy in Washington, DC, and as Adviser to the President of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and to the Minister of Research. Her publications include Les conseillers généraux sous la IVème République (1966), Histoire des dons et legs à l’Institut Pasteur (2001), and Une histoire de l’Institut Pasteur, au coeur de la santé publique mondiale (2015).

Institut Pasteur “Viruses and human cancers” MOOC
The Institut Pasteur Viruses and human cancers MOOC is starting on the 7th of January for a full immersion into relationship between viruses and cancer. It describes the mechanisms of cancer induction by viral infection at the cellular and at the tissue levels.
Four chapters of the MOOC are dedicated to different viral species/families/groups most frequently associated with cancers in humans: retroviruses, papillomaviruses, merkel cell polyoma virus, hepatitis viruses, Epstein-Barr virus and human herpesvirus-8 (HHV8). Epidemiology of viral infection and associated cancers are explained. A last chapter is devoted to innovative prevention measures which might help to decrease the high rate of virus-induced human cancers worldwide.

Preparing for a PhD through the France Excellence Summer Schools program
For the fourth edition of the Summer Schools France Excellence 2019, the French embassy in China and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau have selected a variety of summer schools covering specific subjects (chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, computer science and humanities). These summer schools will take place in France in July 2019.
The France Excellence Summer Schools courses are taught in English by professors-researchers from French universities of international reputation.
The summer schools are made up of guided practical work, training modules to introduction to research, and a first introduction to French language and culture. Taking part in these summer schools must give candidates the opportunity to identify a potential research subject and a thesis supervisor.
You are a Bachelor's or a Master’s degree student enrolled in a Chinese university and you would like to do a PhD? In the framework of a summer school, the France Excellence program 2019 is offering you a full curriculum tailored to achieve this objective.
