2018 Institut Pasteur International Network Symposium - Combating Resistance: Microbes and Vectors

The 4th Institut Pasteur International Network Symposium will be held in Paris on November 15 & 16. This years’s edition will be dedicated to microbes and vectors resistance.

The development of effective antimicrobial treatments is one of the major advances of modern medicine. Today, the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has far reaching consequences for medical procedures and treatments, with many common drugs and interventions potentially rendered ineffective. It is estimated that 700,000 people die across the world every year due to the resistance to treatment of infections including bacterial infections, malaria, HIV/AIDS, fungal infections and tuberculosis.

A recent economic review (O’Neill report) concluded that without strategies to stop the current spread of AMR, the number of people dying from it will reach 10 million per year by 2050.

Considering the severity of the situation, the UN General Assembly convened a one-day high-level meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York on 21 September 2016. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation has launched the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS) initiative in order to strengthen bacteriology laboratories in low-and middle income countries for targeted antibiotic resistance surveillance.

In addition, the use of insecticides to control vectors populations, in particular mosquitoes, remains a key measure for public health. Unfortunately, following years of intensive usage, the emergence of resistance jeopardizes the success of these control strategies worldwide.

Considering the threat that microbes and vectors resistance represent at the global scale, the Institut Pasteur has decided to focus the 4th edition of the Institut Pasteur International Network Symposium on these major issues.

It will in particular bring together scientists, clinicians and public health experts to :
• Showcase high-level research to identify, monitor or predict the emergence of resistant pathogens and vectors;
• Highlight the current efforts in translational science to develop new tools and technologies necessary to tackle the challenges of diagnostic and surveillance of these health threats;
• Examine innovative solutions to practically develop these tools on the field in resource-limited settings.

The abstract submission will open on the 1st May 2018 and close the 24th June. Registration is free for all scientists working in the Institut Pasteur International Network. The organization will support 2 scientists in each institute based on the evaluation of the abstracts.

Registrations for the Institut Pasteur Resistance to antibacterial agents MOOC are now open

The MOOC "Resistance to antibacterial agents" addresses the major public health problem: of the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria isolates, which are responsible for an increase in the morbidity and mortality of a wide range of infections caused by bacteria.

In 2016, the "review on antimicrobial resistance", chaired by Jim O'Neill, estimated that without action, in 2050, 10 million people a year could die from drug-resistant infections. While this figure is hypothetical, the current situation led WHO to classify the emergence and spread of antibacterial agents as an "increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across all government sectors and society."

In this course, we intend to provide basic knowledge regarding resistance to antibacterial agents. We address key questions in the field. This MOOC will first present different antibacterial agents and their use for animals and humans. It will describe the current epidemiological landscape of antibiotic resistance across the globe and explain how the resistance is detected in the medical laboratories. The MOOC will then present the origins of antibiotic resistance and its mechanisms of dissemination, before proposing different approaches to control its spread. Finally, this MOOC will highlight the alternatives to antibiotics, the most current molecules in use, and ongoing novel molecule development.

The MOOC starts on May 14th, 2018. Registrations are now open online, deadline July 24th.

Calmette & Yersin Internship Grant

The annual call for applications for Calmette & Yersin internship grants is now open.

The Traineeship Grants, funded by the Institut Pasteur Department of International Affairs, are designed to facilitate mobility within the Institut Pasteur International Network (RIIP) and to promote and facilitate traineeships at Institut Pasteur in Paris or in a RIIP member institute for scientists (students, researchers and technicians) from the Institut Pasteur and from the RIIP, issued in priorities from low-income countries.
